WHAT IS IT?

Weird Cabinet is a space for my passions, animation, woodworking, and all things odd.

This series started off with designing a trophy for the biggest slam at a local skate comp my friends at @uglyskateboards was putting on (last few slides). It evolved into an entire series of Weird Cabinets inspired by the inevitable SLAM and trying to freeze that moment right before face meets pavement. It only made sense to use broken skateboards in the build process and I couldn’t be more happy with how these little guys turned out.

This cabinet was built to show off a Glock G45 pistol and was designed to be viewed and functional from both sides.

The dual quilted maple drawer faces combined with the tulip wood, white ash, walnut, and hint of purple heart, create a nice color balance that feels just right.

"Catch & Release"

This is actually one of the first songs that was “completed” using a simple newspaper technique. As the other songs around it began to close in - it became apparent that for this to fit it was going to need a MAJOR facelift. And a much needed one at that. Version 2 was born.

Day 18 - Seney Stretch

With this video it was time to reel it in a bit and get back to the roots. A long journey in a hot rod. Enter Seney Stretch - a 25 Mile dead straight length of highway located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. If you’re heading west, this corridor takes you to Mother Superior - hence the healthy representation of water throughout…. but SHHHH - Keep it secret, keep it Superior.

DAY 8 - Seven Weeks in County

Transitioning from Gild the Lily to Seven Weeks in County we carried over the bird theme to add a sense of continuity between the two. The song is set to an oddly familiar barron landscape featuring the remnants of deer skulls and prison/jail imagery as Billy is chased down by the skeleton bird.

Conceptually, we explored a few variations in art style, but the overall vision remained steady from storyboard to completion. For the bird, we opted for a scrapwood look, letting the animation bring it all to life.

Knowing this would likely be a popular song, taking the extra time to polish really paid off.

The overall vision of this project was simple - take us on an epic drive with @Billystrings at the helm of his ‘72 Chevelle. The first step in creating visuals? Coming up with a look for our main character—Mr. Strings himself.

Stylistically we each tried a few options before ultimately landing here. @error.art.png came in clutch with his final renditions of Billy’s cartoon style character.
